Top Tips: Dive into your 5-a-day

Top Tip 1: 5 reasons to eat your 5 portions of fruit and veg a day

1. Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals, and include healthy nutrients such as float, vitamin C and potassium.
2. They are an excellent source of dietary fibre, which can help to maintain a healthy gut and prevent a range of digestion problems, including constipation.
3. A diet high in fibre can reduce your risk of bowel cancer.
4. They can help to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and some other cancers.
5. Fruit and vegetables contribute to a healthy, balanced diet.

Top Tip 2: Exercise doesn’t have to be high impact – go swimming
If getting hot and sweaty puts you off the gym, then why not try a low impact alternative like swimming?
Swimming is a great workout for getting in cardio and toning your body. It is one of the few sports that doesn’t cause any stress to the skeletal system, yet water resistance has a similar effect to using a lightweight on a resistance machine at the gym.

Not only that, but research suggests that swimming actually boosts endorphins in the body, which creates that feel-good feeling.

Eat well, move more, live longer.

Valley Leisure have teamed up with Change4Life to create a 6-week healthy lifestyle course to help children and their families. Top Kids will see the 8 healthy behaviours advocated by the national Change4Life programme brought to life through a course of six fun and interactive sessions.

Who can take part in this programme?

The course is aimed at children aged 5-11 years old and their parents/guardians. It is designed to inform families on how to eat better, move more and achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What will Top Kids sessions include?

Each session is delivered over 2hours, 4-6pm. The programme will be taught by Level 2 instructors, coaches or teachers, as well as a qualified chef with experience in obesity awareness, Change4Life awareness and motivational training.  Each session will be made up of the following:

  • ‘Top Tips for Top Kids’ – Healthy living information and awareness
  • ‘Up and About’ – Fun family activities including exercise and games
  • ‘Me Size Meals’ – Understanding portion sizing and healthy eating recipes

What is the cost of this course and when is the next one available?

The cost of this course is just £5 per session, per child. This means that adults come along for free! The £30 fee (for the 6 weeks) must be paid upfront.

The programme will run at Andover Leisure Centre, with the next available course starting on Wednesday 8th June.

What will my family gain?

Participants will not only feel and look better, but gain free recipes, supporting materials, t-shirts and water bottles. Families can also take advantage of the Top Kids Rewards Programme. Families who attend 5 out of the 6 sessions will receive a FREE family adventure golf session at Charlton Lakeside Pavilion; those who attend all six session will receive a FREE family swim.

Walk and a picnic

Another one for the entire family, why not take in the fresh air and go for a walk. Not only does this get you moving, but team it up with a picnic and you’ve got yourself a day out! For your picnic, why not experiment with some easy and healthy recipes, we love this recipe from Change 4 Life for a new potato and tuna salad. This recipe is to serve four adults, so you might want to alter the recipe if there are a lot of you going, just take in mind that children’s portions will be smaller.

3586893833_c370f029f0_o

Ingredients:

  • 1kg new potatoes, scrubbed
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 lemon-juice and zest
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cans tuna in water, drained
  • 5 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped
  • ¼ cucumber, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped

What to do:

  1. Cook the potatoes in boiling water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, mix together the garlic, parsley, lemon juice, zest and olive oil to make the dressing.
  3. Drain the potatoes well and put them into a salad bowl. Pour over the dressing and stir it through so that the flavours are soaked up by the potatoes as they cool down.
  4. Flake the tuna fish into chunks and add to the potatoes with the spring onions, cucumber and tomatoes. Toss together gently and serve at once.

Nutritional information:

  • Per adult portion (i.e. ¼ recipe)
  • 311 kcals
  • 21g protein
  • 7g fat of which 1g saturates
  • 43g carbohydrate of which 5g sugars
  • 3g dietary fibre
  • 33mg sodium
  • 79mg salt

Because it’s a picnic, you need more than just a salad to serve everyone. You needs to provide snacks. Sticking with the healthy theme, we suggest that you cut up carrots, cucumber and pepper into batons; bring a pot of low fat hummus too for dipping. One picnic favourite is mini sausages – these can often be quite fatty and have a low pork percentage. Instead of getting shop bought mini sausages, buy venison sausages that have a high meat percentage (try to buy sausages that have over 80%) and cut them to make disks.

For a sweet treat, pack a range of fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, melon and grapes, team those up with some dark chocolate it you are after a real sugar fix.

There are loads more activities on offer at Andover Leisure Centre, The Rapids, Romsey Sports Centre, Charlton Lakeside and Knightwood Leisure Centre for you to try this weekend including golf, racket sports, crazy golf and more! To see our full range of facilities, just visit our website and pick the centre you want to go to.
