Make your sports social with a racquet!

With a summer jam packed with tennis tournaments, the UK is going mad for racquet sports! With Wimbledon and the US Open Series, Tennis is erupting into one of the UK’s favourite sports; but alongside this firm favourite, squash and badminton have started to pick up speed. But why should we do them? Here are a few of the benefits.

Federball

Squash

Not to be confused with the butternut variety, Squash is an indoor racquet sport played in a four walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. One of the great benefits of Squash is that it is played by 2 – 4 players, so instead of going to the pub or the cinema, you can get active while you socialise! Here are a few more added benefits:

  • Improves cardiovascular health. A game of squash can see you running, leaping and diving for the ball
  • Increases strength and fitness
  • Helps towards maintaining a healthy weight
  • Increases flexibility and strength in the back
  • Promotes good coordination, agility and flexibility
  • Builds hand–eye coordination

Squash is available to play at Andover Leisure Centre, book a court by calling 012634 347100.

Badminton

Badminton is a great, social form of indoor exercise for people of all ages. Unlike some sports, Badminton is fairly easy to pick up with both the racquet and the shuttlecock being light of weight. Because of this, it makes it the perfect sport for older people and children. Further benefits of Badminton include:

  • It’s suitable for all people regardless of ability
  • Works the entire body through a large range of movement, including leaps, lunges, twists, turns and stretches.
  • Improves balance and co-ordination
  • Boosts upper body strength, core stability and stamina
  • Stretches muscles from the shoulder and arms through to the abdomen and down the legs.
  • Gives you mental health benefits and that feel-good factor.

Badminton is available to play at Andover Leisure Centre (01264 347100) and Knightwood Leisure Centre (02380 276254).

Tennis

Tennis is a great high intensity sport that provides an all-round workout. A favourite for all ages and abilities, tennis can burn up to 600 calories an hour – and you don’t have to be a pro to play! Here are a few more benefits of tennis:

  • Increases aerobic fitness
  • Improves strength and flexibility
  • Improves balance and co-ordination
  • Stretches and tones muscles from the shoulder and arms through to the abdomen and down the legs.
  • Can be high or low intensity
